On September 11th, 2001, a whole nightmare of the terror attacks hit hard. The US had to shut down its airspace, grounding heaps of planes all over North America. Stranded in the middle of all this chaos, a whopping 38 planes had to make an unexpected pitstop in Gander, a tiny town in Newfoundland that usually hangs out with just 9,000 locals. Suddenly, with all these unexpected visitors, the headcount skyrocketed to almost 20,000.
Now, Come From Away dives into the story of this one group of passengers from one of those flights and the folks from Gander who opened their homes to them. You've got this mix of characters: the first female pilot from American Airlines, a pair of Kevins who happen to be a couple, and an Egyptian chef. Initially worried about how he'd be received, turns out, the chef's fears were totally unfounded. The show weaves all their tales together, giving us this heartwarming snapshot of human connection in seriously tough times.
This smash musical based on real life events is coming to you on its North American tour. Fun fact: The musical gets its title from Newfoundland slang. The people of Gander refer to the passengers as "come from aways".
